Making restaurant terraces slip-resistant.

Granite slabs on a restaurant terrace are retrofitted with an R12 anti-slip coating.

To make restaurant terraces slip-resistant, a professional, durable and legally compliant solution is important – especially due to liability, legal requirements and changing weather conditions. For restaurant terraces, at least R11 is recommended, often even R11–R12, depending on the slope and use.

Located directly on Bleichenfleet, the Galleria shopping arcade is part of the newly redesigned promenade along the water. The terraces by the water are used by the Galleria's restaurants. The flooring of the restaurant terraces is made of granite slabs. The granite was slippery and restaurant visitors, employees and passers-by were at risk of slipping on the slippery granite. The photos show the slip hazard warning sign.

A solution was sought to remedy the slippery conditions in the existing building. A chemical solution involving roughening the granite with acid was rejected, as this makes surfaces even more slippery in the long term. Instead, a sustainable and environmentally friendly anti-slip solution was chosen. GriP anti-slip coatings are environmentally friendly and do not damage the granite tiles, so there is no chemical reaction with the surface. In addition, SWISSGriP is transparent and the coating is only slightly shiny when certain light hits it. The appearance of the beautiful granite slab is thus preserved.
